‘Hackers are mostly vegetarians,' says German hackerUpdated 02:36am (Mla time) Sept 14, 2004 CONTRARY to the popular notion that they are overweight geeks who spend most of their time in front of a computer, hackers are just like you and me. They have a social life, a girlfriend, and are more often than not slim, a German hacker known as Van Hauser told reporters in Manila. The 29-year-old German whitehat hacker was in Manila last week as one of the security experts invited to speak at a local forum on cyber-security. Van Hauser said most hackers that he knew, however, preferred to wear black clothes, were vegetarians, and loved cats. "I met a fellow hacker here [in Manila] and I found out that he was also a vegetarian just like me," said Van Hauser who resembles the young Lex Luthor in the television series Smallville. "They also like going to the disco," said the young hacker who has been doing some ethical hacking jobs for high-profile companies in Germany. He also works part-time for Suse Labs. Van Hauser said hacking tools are increasingly becoming "user-friendly" and powerful. Hence, most so-called script-kiddies were the ones involved in malicious attacks on computer systems as the tools were readily available. He also said that very few hackers were motivated by money. "Very few are hacking for profit," Van Hauser said, adding that "it is very rare that criminals engage in hacking." Van Hauser said recent off-the-shelf security products were "getting better" and could now ward off most malicious attacks. Van Hauser has been doing ethical hacking for the past 10 years. He admitted, however, that his career as a security expert started in high school, where he tried cracking the students’ passwords. "I did it mostly due to curiosity," he said. Van Hauser is president of The Hacker’s Choice, a group of system and network security experts in Germany. Source: INQ7.NET http://news.inq7.net/infotech/index.php?index=1&story_id=10879
